Books

Simply People by Susan Clayton, the space between,
(website address: www.thespacebetween.com)
ISBN 0-9538559-3-7

I like dipping into this book as I need or when I have a spare moment to read a section or two. I find it helps me develop a simple explanation to topics that sometimes feel complicated or difficult to describe. It is based on Gestalt principles.

Managing Across Cultures by Susan C Schneider and Jean-Louis Barsoux, Financial Time Prentice Hall
(an imprint of Pearson Education Ltd)
ISBN 0-13-272220-8

This book is full of specific examples of differences between several country cultures (including American, Japanese and various European cultures) in a non-judgmental way. I imagine this book being useful not only when you first start working with people from these different cultures but also a source you can call on when misunderstandings are arising and you want to check if it relates to cultural differences. The style of writing was such that I even read it in my own time!

Teams: Structure, process, Culture and Politics by Eileen K Aranda, Luis Aranda with Kristi Conlon, Prentice Hall,
ISBN 0-13-494584-0

This book supplies some useful frameworks, not only when putting together a new team but also ideas on how to improve existing team performance. There are activities in this book to help you reflect if you so wish. It has some background about teams, described in straightforward ways.

Nonviolent Communication: a language of compassion by Marshall B Rosenberg, Puddle Dancer Press,
ISBN 1-892005-02-6 (possible to purchase through Bridget Belgrave at Life Resources, website address: www.LifeResources.org.uk)

Nonviolent communication (NVC) is a way of using language non-judgmentally, and is based on four "ingredients". People learn to state the facts of a situation without interpretation or opinion; they recognise the feelings it stirs in them; what human need they have that is not being met; and what action they want taken to meet their need. The process may be straightforward, but using it takes practice. This book provides examples and sample dialogues which I found great benefit to my understanding of the approach.

Facilitation by Trevor Bentley, the space between,
ISBN 0-9538559-0-2 (website address: www.thespacebetween.com)

This Book will suit people who like real examples to support the ideas that are being put forward. It is easy to read and I go back to it to refresh my memory and help me develop my own facilitation approach.
